Calcedony is a variety of quartz that has been used to create some of the loveliest early Victorian earrings. It has been seen in a pale blue or grey color of uniform tint. here are the best we have had in many years. In addition, the stones are mounted in a most unusual setting referred to as "Pinchbeck".
Collectors of true Pinchbeck will agree that this gold "look-alike" is rarely found today and difficult to identify. Numerous combinations of gold-like metals have been created and are also claimed to be genuine Pinchbeck. We cannot honestly make the claim that this mounting is truly original Pinchbeck. It has been tested several times with "yes" and "no" and "maybe" among the answers. However, the metal is an unusual alloy often used as gold would have been.
Whatever the answer may be, this pair of very special earrings deserve the compliments they will receive. Each earring measures 2 1/4 inches in length and the total weight is 11.3 grams. the design of the metal work is unique and undoubtedly hand crafted. We have never seen this design before after much research.
They are in lovely antique condition.
