Generally, when we see the buckle design in jewelry we associate it with the ever popular bangle bracelet. T see it so beautifully rendered on a locket is a treat to own and wear. Numerous meanings are attributed to the buckle form--safety, security and protection. It is one of Queen Victoria's favorites .
The locket has a beautifully etched reverse side. The interior is line with black silk. Both interior sides have rims and covers. It opens and closes tightly. The engraving on the exterior has a small cartouche that could hold newly engraved owner's initials if desired. The bale is large enough to hold a "book chain" that could complete the popular necklace of the day. Now my search for the proper chain begins.
The locket measures 1 3/4 inches by 1 1/4 inch excluding the bale. Overall, the weight is 20.8 grams. It is in very fine antique condition and shows little or no surface wear.
