There is something hypnotic about banded agates. The black and white contrasts appear in many designs today, but were used as tokens of respect for the dearly departed centuries ago. Jewelry featuring these stones were worn during periods of mourning as a way of commemorating the passing of a loved one.
The ring features four matching cabochon banded agate stones mounted in a 9K rose gold setting. Enhancing the black and white coloration are three small natural rubies. The setting has been tested and is guaranteed to be 9K --a bit higher based on the strong reaction to 9K acid. The shoulders of the mounting feature delicate engraving and there is evidence of the engraving on the shank. The underside of the ring appears to have been a locket which may have held a lock of hair as a memory of the loved one. It most likely had a cover at one time. We are only guessing.
The ring is size 7.25 and could be re-sized by a competent jeweler. The weight is 1.9 grams. The curve of the mounting hugs the finger and shows the beauty of the matching agates. This ring is an excellent example of fine early Georgian jewelry.
