There is a special charm about this pair of earrings. They are somewhat smaller than many we have posted in the past, but their style and presence when worn are worthy of attention.
The opals are lovely and exhibit flashes of red, blue and green depending on how the lights hit when the wearer turns her head. centered on each opal is a star shape holding a tiny rose cut diamond in its center. The gold fan shaped topping the opal holds two rose cuts on each earring. the mountings have been acid tested and are 9 K gold--so typical of many late Victorian earrings. The opals are held in prong settings that are completely secure. Our jeweler, a gemologist, believes the fire opals are natural and are very fine stones.
The earrings weigh 4.8 grams and measure 1 inch in length including the top curve of the wire. At heir widest point they measure 3/5 inch. Opals are my birthstone, but I cannot keep them all.
