There are two reasons that make this pair of earrings special. The first is the enamel design that is an excellent example of Japanese artistry. The design is typical of the Japanese work of the late 1800s that took the western world by storm and captivated jewelry designers of the period. Second is their size which is not at all common of the period. When worn these large disks cover a large portion of the ear lobe.
The size leads us to believe that the earrings may have been created by converting buttons or cuff links. Only a guess, but a possibility. The earrings measure 7/8 inch in diameter and weigh 4.2 grams. However, they are very wearable and are in fine antique condition.
