Time after time we have searched for one of the Victorian or Georgian prized and popular animal micro-mosaics. This example is a first for us--two stunning dogs rather than the single do we usually see. In addition, the workmanship is astounding. It exhibits some of the finest mosaic work we have seen. It equals many museum examples on view and is in the hands of collectors.
Many of the finest micro-mosaics were created in Rome and Florence and date from the early 1800s. We date this naturalistic design somewhat later. This fine example exhibits the densely packed minuscule tesserae of the superb workmanship. The best of the mosaicists were able to execute the most perfect examples.
A fine simple gold frame (tested and guaranteed) surrounds the mosaic. Overall the piece measures 2 1/2 inches by 2 inches. It weighs 38.4 grams. The "T" pin and "C: clasp are original. The overall condition is excellent.
