Chalcedony is a variety of quartz that has been used to create some of the finest and lovliest early Victorian jewelry. It has been seen in a pale blue or grey color of uniform tint. Here are the best we have had in many years. The stones are mounted in a most unusual setting referred to as "Pinchbeck".
Collectors of true Pinchbeck will agree that this look-alike is rarely found today and difficult to identify. It is pricey as well. Numerous combinations of gold-like metals have been created and are also claimed to be genuine Pinchbeck. We cannot honestly claim that this mounting is truly original Pinchbeck. It has been tested several times with "yes", "no" and "maybe" among the answers. However, the metal here is an unusual alloy very much used as gold would have been. It is hard and will not tarnish.
Whatever the answer may be, this pair of special earrings deserve the compliments they will receive. Each earring measures 2 1/4 inc in length and the total weight is 11.3 grams. The design of the metal work is unique and undoubtedly hand crafted. We have never seen this design before. We have tried research but have not found any reference to the design.
They are in lovely condition.
