We are overwhelmed by this dramatic creation. Our only wish is that the person this piece memorializes was named. That might have made it even better than it is. Although we have placed this in the jewelry category , it may have been made to hang in a picture frame. We'd rather see it hanging from a heavy Georgian chain around your neck. It is really worth showing off.
It weighs 43.7 grams and measures 2 1/2 inches in length and 1 7/8 inch in width. The reverse features a large oval display of hair under glass. A wide ring of cobalt blue enamel surrounds the hair. There is a crack in one area of the enamel which we show in a photo. We choose not to repair it for fear of doing more damage.
A small white plaque resting under the urn lettered in black reads "REST IN PEACE". This is one of the most dramatic memorial pieces we have ever seen. It is English in origin and dates around 1780.
