It isn't often we come across antique jewelry created from smoky quartz, and we have never seen anything of this caliber. What is even more unusual is the "back to front" design of the original box. The stones are mounted in silver that has darkened with age , and we choose not to try to clean the silver leaving it for the new owner to make the choice.
The brooch measures 3 and 1/2 inches in length with the primary central stone is 1 and 1/2 inch in diameter. Each earring is 1 and 3/4 inch in length. Although the interior of the box shows a bit of wear, the indentations created to hold the jewelery are a perfect picture of originality. The exterior of the box is slightly worn, and old inventory numbers are still featured on the bottom.
We have examined each stone d no signs of wear or damage. It is possible to add a bale in order to make the piece wearable as a pendant.
The set is an excellent example of Victorian creativity. We find no marks to indicate origin, but suspect it is European.
