Although Whitby jet is somewhat fragile and rarely survives in this excellent condition, this pair exhibits unusual carving of superb quality. The openwork is perfect--no chips, no cracks.
We believe that originally the earrings were designed with wires to be worn on pierced ears. A later conversion, possibly during the Edwardian era made them into screw back earrings. This could easily be changed into wires again.
The drops measure two inches in length. It does not include the silver tops. Jet is an amazing material because it is so very lite in weight and so comfortable to wear.
