All the characteristics of Renaissance Revival jewelry are evident in this striking pendant. Included are all colored gemstones (rubies and emeralds) pearls and enamel that were so important in the period design. We generally see more pieces that are silver gilt when marked with an Austro-Hungarian signature. This however is French and is in 18K gold.
The piece hangs from a gold chain that is interspersed with matching pearls. We do not know if this is original to the pendant or not. Together they are well suited to each other.
It is believed that these gems were deliberate counterfeits of the 15th – 17th century pieces to fool Victorians.
Both the 18-inch chain and pendant are marked with a French hallmark, but taking accurate photos of the mark has been impossible. There is some minute loss of enamel on both the front and back of the pendant. This seems to be characteristic for older pieces made this delicately.
All in all, it is in excellent antique condition.
