Reverse crystals depicting animal figures have been a popular since the 1800s. However, this masterful Great Dane painting is a particular favorite of ours. The circular crystal is mounted on a 14K bar brooch that is a gold version of the dog's collar in miniature. Brooches with reverse intaglio crystals have a three – dimensional effect. This is achieved by engraving and reverse painting on the flat back of a domed piece of crystal. The technique was an English invention in the mid 1800s. It was considered a novelty at the time, but its appeal continued into the 20th century. The mother of pearl back further sets off the reverse painted subject. The crystal is one half inch in diameter. The pin as a whole measures two and one half inches. The condition is excellent.
