This is a hidden photo match safe. Once the lid is opened, the front panel opens to reveal the photo. Its marked "Sterling", "156S", "Pat. March 31, 1896" referring to patent no. 557,101, plus the Battin & Co., Newark, NJ maker's mark. Its approximately 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches with a striker to the bottom. Excellent condition with a strong hinge spring and original photo. During the period it was advertised as the "Secret Photo Match Box."
