This is a c. 1905 match safe featuring an underwater scene of a mermaid being "chased' by a fish, both sides the same. The bezel is marked "Sterling." It was probably made by Unger Bros., Newark, NJ as the motif is identical to item #8209 that appears in Unger's 1901 and 1904 trade catalogs. Its approximately 2 3/8 x 1 1/2 inches with a striker to the bottom. It appears it was originally gold gilted but most of the gilting has worn away. Excellent condition with a strong lid spring, has a couple of small edge dings.
