This is a c. 1890 trick match safe listed as a "Surprise Match-box" in The Book of Ingenious & Diabolical Puzzles by Jerry Slocum, page 46. The apparent lid "release button" is a fake and has a hidden pin. When pressed the individual's finger is pricked. The actual lid release is hidden under the leather wrap on the opposite side. The body of the match safe is nickel plated brass and is approximately 1 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches with strikers on both ends. Excellent condition with a strong lid spring. It has some plating loss and a old solder repair to the hinge area.
