Snuff box/match safe, sterling by William Boot, 1807 Birmingham hallmarks

The affluent oftentimes professionally modified sterling snuff boxes by adding a striking surface. This snuff box has complete Birmingham 1807 sterling hallmarks for William Boot, made 20 years before the first recorded sale of friction matches by John Walker, a chemist, living in Stockton on Tees. Its approximately 2 1/4 x 1 3/8 x 3/4 inches with a gold gilted interior. Excellent condition.
