This match safe has an engraved design on the front and an inscription on the reverse was a presentation item from Hon. Wm. Connell to Hon. Charles Emery Smith at a dinner held at the Shoreham Hotel on Mar. 4, 1904. Hon. Wm. Connell was a 3 term the Republican Congressman from Pennsylvania and Hon. Charles Emery Smith was the Post Master General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The lid is held secure by a latch, press the plain circle on the front to release the lid. The bezel is marked "sterling", "497" plus the Wm. Hayden Co., Newark, NJ mark. Its approximately 2 x 1 1/2 inches with a striker to the bottom. The edges are concave. Excellent condition with a strong lid spring.
