Lovely old Walter Lampl mesh and enamel wide slide bracelet from the 1930's or1940's. The WL hallmark is an early mark of his.
I think this slide bracelet could come all the way open into a long strip, but I didn't want to force it by trying. Currently, slid to its longest dimension, it measures 7-1/2" diameter on the inside, and is 1-1/8"wide. This is long enough to slip over my hand, which I would call average size. Of course, once on, it will easily slide to fit a smaller wrist. The bracelet is in remarkably good condition considering it is 80 to 100 years old. The smoky light blue enamel is all present, all of the intricate design on the medallion is clear, as are all of the little pearls, I'll call them faux to be safe. The gold plating on the mesh has only a little bit of wear, and there is a real shine and glow to the mesh, a lovely patina that comes only with age. I wonder if the little glass turquoise ball in the center is original, as it is not faded in color, but looking at the prongs that hold it, it looks like it has been there for quite some time. The setting around the little ball is exquisite, by the way. A wonderful find! Marked WL on the back of the slide.
Walter Lampl was born in 1895 in New York City. In 1921, he opened his wholesale jewelry company and named it Walter Lampl. He became a very prominent jeweler. His early pieces are coveted by collectors due to their rarity. His beautifully designed Art Deco fine jewelry pieces demand high auction prices. After a wonderful and very successful career, Lampl died suddenly at age 50, in 1945. The family continued the business until 1959, when it closed its doors. Walter Lampl is known for two things mainly: being a fantastic designer using superb quality materials and workmanship, and being a very kind and generous man. There is a fabulous and inspiring article about him called Walter Lampl: Creators of the Unusual…As Usual,” by Cheri Van Hoover which you can find online. Reading it affirms the very positive impression one gains by looking at and touching his creations. This one is a true beauty.
