Gold tone sautoir necklace with delightful hearts, one of which has a guilloche center. Sweet design - each side is 15" long, which then joins with a pair of filigree hearts. From these hearts dangle 3 chains and from them the guilloche heart set into another filigree heart. From this dangle 3 long faux pearls. The length of the drop is approximately 5" and it is 1-1/4" at its widest. The total length of the necklace, including the heart and faux pearls drop is 40" There is also a spring clasp, which works well, but the necklace slips easily over one's head. I think the metal is brass, but I am not certain. Nice vintage condition. It has been suggested to me from one person that the necklace is from the 1930's or 40's, and from another that it is from the 50's or 60's...it looks old to me!
A sautoir is a French term for a long necklace that suspends a tassel or other ornament. Necklaces that would fit the criteria for a sautoir have existed throughout history. Sautoirs, as we know them today, evolved in the early part of the twentieth century in response to the elongation of the feminine silhouette created by the columnar styling of dresses of the period.
