Pair of highly carved soapstone bas relief bookends. The carved composition is of a rectangular planter on a stand with chrysanthemum blooming plants and craggy rock. The sculptural composition includes a plinth base with classic scrolled legs. The carving is exceptionally well composed and incorporates the inherent coloration of the natural stone in the composition. This pair of Chinese stone carvings date from the early part of the 20th century or earlier. Please note that there has been some crazing along the edges (see photos). It appears that the left bookend (of our first picture) is missing a foot. This is the actual original stone and not from any damage. 5 ½” ht x 4 ½” w x 1 ¾” D.
