A wonderful pair of Ralph DeRosa clip on earrings! Reaching from both sides of an oval filled with clear rhinestones are dimensional curves that turn under at the edges. At the very end of the curve is a nice touch of 2 different sized rhinestones. The curve has navy enamel on the edges with a row of rhinestones pave set down the center. Interestingly, the setting is gold tone, (DeRosa jewelry was usually gold plated, which these most likely are) but the clear rhinestones are all set in silver tone. The effect of these two colors, and the navy, and the sparkle is both striking and beautiful, not to mention the creative and elegant design. They are in great condition - clips nice and tight, all stones present, the enamel is in good condition, the design is very old world, yet ageless. I just noticed when looking at the huge photo in the listing that one of the rhinestones is dark. It is small enough that I truly did not notice it until seeing it magnified. A couple others may be beginning to darken; it is hard to tell. I think they look fabulous! One earring is marked R DEROSA and the other Pat Pend. They measure 1 1/8" high by 3/4" wide. These would be pre-1955.
Ralph DeRosa Co. was founded in New York City in 1934 by Ralph DeRosa (1884-1942). He was an Italian immigrant from a renowned family of jewelers. Ralph DeRosa jewelry is known for its complex dimensional design, high quality components, translucent enameling and wonderful coloring. Ralph DeRosa jewelry designs tend to be florals, figurals, retro motifs, and designs inspired by the precious jewelry of the era. DeRosa jewelry was expensive at the time and is not easy to come by today. His company made jewelry from the mid-1930's until 1970. After Ralph’s death in 1942, the company was run by his wife Elvira, who was also a designer, and daughters Virginia and Theresa.
