Exquisite Chased or Engraved Choker - Perfect Condition!
This necklace is an enchanting mystery to me. If I had to guess, I would say it is either French, or perhaps Indian, from the very early 1900's. It is in amazingly perfect condition. I wish it could speak! The workmanship is exquisite. The front of the choker is a sort of bookchain -the sections are linked together and oh so delicately done! Hanging from the chain are 9 hollow round beads with a chased star pattern. There is a backing on them, and each has a small slot on the side (see last 2 photos). The side and back of the choker is beautifully chased or engraved in a delicate floral pattern. It has a backing clasp like a belt buckle might that will make it smaller or larger depending on the size of the neck - there is a band with10 holes that a small knob slides into and a metal flat loop to secure the belt in place. The necklace is small. The largest measurement when it is closed is 13 1/4". Open, the length is 14 1/4". The chain width is 1/2", the "belt" part is 7/16". The dangling circles are 1/2" diameter. I have never seen anything like this before. It is incredibly ornate, beautiful, and very unusual. If you have any knowledge of this type of jewelry and workmanship and could educate us, please do!!
