A beautiful 19th-century pastoral landscape depicting a scene from rural England. At a time when many British painters were following the approach of traditional English landscape artists, such as John Constable, this particular artist has instead drawn upon continental influences.
As such, the trees guide our view along the river and ultimately towards a distant City. While the foreground is dimly lit in contrast to the illuminated horizon. The large tree in centre-left of the canvas is particularly well rendered.
