Perfect ceramic seed pot with lid. Formed and etched by Navajo artist Marvin Blackmore.
Bought by my mother. She collected Native American pottery and jewelry.
This seed pot is from a series of his work depicting animals amidst the highly intricate decoration. The circular windows have a bear, deer, buffalo, and bird. The pot has the scent of earthen clay. It is a lovely piece and amazing-transfixing to look at. Check out the interview with him on Youtube.
His creations are one of a kind, no two exactly alike.
Marvin Blackmore has a presence on the Internet (google his name), and on Youtube, as well as being featured on several American Indian sites which sell Navajo and Southwest items.
From the internet: "MARVIN BLACKMORE grew up in Cortez, Colorado, where he was first exposed to carved earthenware Pueblo pottery, typical of that area. His first teacher was the Navajo potter, Manuel Morgan, who taught Blackmore the basics of handling and firing clay. Blackmore's stated mission is "to create the most complex intricate pottery the world has ever seen"! To achieve this, he covers the surface of his vessels with multiple layers of colored slips. He then etches and carves into the surface, exposing the different layers of colored slips. He creates an allover repeated sequence of intricate geometric patterns with motifs drawn from the natural world and traditional Native American imagery."
His work is unique and he is quite innovative. He tries to push the boundaries of his art.
This pot would make a wonderful gift for any collector.
