Robert Decker was born in Troy in New York in 1847 and died in Melrose, New York in 1921. He was one of the few artists that received recognition and fame while he was alive for his artwork. He studied under R. Swain Gifford and was known as a realistic painter of the Adirondacks. He owned a two story house that sat above Lake George.
