Alvan Fisher was born in Needham in 1793. He was pioneer in painting landscapes, genre, especially portraits and animal paintings. He painted with very prominent artists such as Asher Durand, Washington Allston, and Chester Harding. He sold over 1000 paintings between 1826 - 1863. He died in Dedham, Mass. in 1863.
This painting is a perfect example of an early American portrait. The painting measures 34 x 28 with the frame, it is signed on the lower left and the painting has been lined.
