Adriaen Van Ostade was born in 1610 and died in 1685 in Holland. He was active in Holland, Germany and the Netherlands. He became a pupil of Franz Hals a portrait painter. Van Ostade painted a series of Tavern Scenes in 1653 some of them hanging in the Lourvre. His painting of people in exaggeration and frolicking in this scene is typical of his work.
