The painting is an original oil on canvas painting by J. Foxcroft Cole. Cole was born in Maine but grew up in Boston, Mass. He studied in France at the Ecole des Beaux of Art, with Normandy landscape painter Emile Lambinet. He was influenced by William Morris Hunt and the Barbizon painters such as Corot, Daubingny and Jacque. When he returned to Boston, these same artists helped by buying Cole's painting and promoting him in the art world. He exhibited in the states as well as the Paris Salon and the London Royal Academy.
