The Thistle pattern by Stangl was produced from 1951 to 1978. The 13” kidney-shaped platter has pink thistles and green leaves on a cream background. Because each piece was hand painted no two are alike. The Thistle pattern had over 50 different pieces and the kidney-shaped platter is very hard to find.
There are two flaws, one is a nick or chip on the bottom rim of the plate, and at the edge of the top leaf there is a yellowish discoloration. It looks like water seeped below the glaze, but I can find no crack in the glaze. Both of these flaws have close-up pictures, and the platter is priced accordingly. The bottom has the Stangl trademark stamp of an oval with Stangl in script, then POTTERY and TRENTON N.J. Below this is THISTLE. There is also the word STANGL embossed into the pottery.
