Large authentic antique, 18th century, Greek orthodox icon triptych, finely hand painted on wood panels. The center wooden panel with niche carved as a raised arch, within, an image of the crowned Mother of God (Theotokos), flanked by the Greek script.
Virgin crowned and nimbate, in a richly embroidered veil of almost maroon hue, supports a tiny, rather adult-looking Christ child on one hand, also nimbate and crowned, flanked by Greek calligraphy, dressed in elaborate gown, holds in the right hand a “globus cruciger”.
The wings with two rows of selected saints, inscribed with Greek script.
The Greek calligraphy on the back panels when closed with Russian inscription in the middle.
CONDITION: Showing its age to be of 200 years, with some age wear overall, the paint surface distressed as well as wear and craquelure overall with age and use, with dark patina. Free of repaint and repairs.
