An authentic Ancient Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty period time (50-220 AD) ceramic stove model decorated with two cooking cauldrons and the tableware. Reddish earthenware covered with rich green glaze. Models of stoves, both in bronze and ceramic were popular during the Han dynasty but became rare in later periods. In ancient China like in ancient Egypt, the afterlife was conceived as a continuation of life on earth. To provide for the needs of the afterlife, a variety of mortuary objects were buried with the person to enjoy in next existence wealth and happiness. The ceramic stove would have been used by the model chef to prepare the delicacies most favored by our tomb occupant in the afterlife. CONDITION: The stove is in good condition, considering its age, approximately 2000 years except for small chips. No repairs or restorations. MEASUREMENTS: Length: 19.7cm (7 ¾ in).Width: 18cm (7 1/8 in). Height: 10cm (4 in). REFERENCES: Our knowledge of food preparation in the Han dynasty is quite rich. An actual stove would have risen to waist height.[3] The “Neize” chapter (Guide to the Domestic Virtues) of the Liji, written in the first century BC, provides details of the ingredients, preparation, and presentation of the cuisines of the elite.

REFERENCES: Another similar stove is in the Royal Ontario Museum collection published in the book Royal Ontario Museum collection of The T.T. Tsui Galleries of Chinese Art Published in 1996, plate 47.
