This is one of those rare and unusual pieces that do not come to market often. This is a striking piece on display as the photographs attest. The front of the piece is decorated with a hand painted copy of William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s (1825-1905) “L’amour et Psyche” (Cupid and Psyche as children as painted by Bouguereau circa 1890.) The quality of the painting is superior and has been signed “E. C. Gnaweuver” as photographed. The two other panels are decorated in cascades of pink roses as photographed. The quality of the decoration on the handles is consistent with the superior decoration of the piece. Each bears a collar of gold and gold filigree at the top, a cascade of pink roses on the outside and a collar of gold at the bottom.
This rare and unusual American Belleek three handled loving cup/vase measures 7 ½ inches tall, 8 inches across the handles, 4 inches across the opening and 6 inches across the base. There are no chips, cracks, crazing or damages of any kind to the hand painted surfaces. The gold work also remains in excellent condition. Mentioned for accuracy is a small fleabite on the bottom that is unseen on display. The CAC purple Pallet mark on the bottom indicates the blank was manufactured in Trenton, New Jersey, and denotes the American Belleek "Ceramic Art Company" which later became Lenox. The mark was used from 1889 - 1906. Rarely will you find such a beautifully decorated and ornate handled American Belleek loving cup in such fabulous condition.
Additional background information: Along with Alexandre Cabanel, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was the most influential upholder of the conservative values of French academic art in his day. His paintings stress those values: precise drawing, contour, and finish, along with strict adherence to the rules of anatomy, perspective, academic modeling, and physiognomic expression in which internal character is revealed by outward appearance. An heir of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Bouguereau's subjects included Classical, mythological, allegorical, or Orientalist themes, as well as contemporary history. Most of his works were popularly known through engravings.
