This is a 10.5 inch hand painted plate by the celebrated artist and engraver Gale Turnbull. The pattern is named Going to Town. At one time this plate would have been used as dinnerware but it now a coveted art piece. The back of the piece states "Hand Painted Under Glazes by Gale Turnbull Vernon Kilns California Going to Town". The plate has one small crack about 1/4" that is on the top under the glaze only (see photos) and is priced accordingly. I have photographed the edge/side of the plate so you can view it easily. The plate would be double in price without this flaw.
Gale Turnbull invented the process of an acid engraving under the glaze which represents the actual drawing of the artist before and after the firings. The plate is bright and depicts the Mexican couple walking past a small village... It is absolutely delightful.
Note: Gale Turnbull was hired as Vernon Kilns pottery company art director in 1936.
