Semi Nude Woman Woodblock bookplate Ex Libris Eric Gill
This is an original, rare and much coveted book plate belonging (stated) to the library of Samuel Kahn. The bookplate from an Eric Gill woodcut is 3 1/2" x 4 1/4" and in perfect condition. The plate is attached to the inside cover of a First Edition of "Race" by William McFee. The book was published by Doubleday, Page & Company, copyright 1934, stated First Edition" The book is a good reading copy. The bookplate is stunning & in perfect condition. Eric Gill (1882-1940) was a prolific English artist. This "Woman Looking Through Foliage" (1936) is listed as P907 in "The Engravings of Eric Gill" by Christopher Skelton. It is also listed in "The Eric Gill Collection" (1936) listed #815. It is a gorgeous rendering of a semi-nude woman seeking to see her way clear through much intricate foliage. The title is "Ex-Libris SAMUEL KAHN". Eric Gill was a prominent figure in early 20t century art. Most of his work was done in black and white. Gill designed and engraved more than fifty bookplates out of a lifetime of production of 1,000 items. His bookplates ranged from prosaic to erotic. This wood-engraving is 99 x 7.6 cm. This will only increase in value.
