This Guro mask is likely the work of Sabu bi Boti who is onw of the seven most famous Guro master wood carvers in the Ivory Coast of Africa. This mask is carved out of one piece of wood and has been painted with bright colors which is typical of Boti's work. The Guro mask is a representation of Zambie's (supernatural being) wife. Wearing this ceremonial mask imparts benevolent magical powers which protect the owner, his family and the tribe. This mask was likely used due to the oil deposit patina of the inside of the mask. There is generalized wear, minor chips and paint loss in some areas. It measures 20 inches in height x 6.5 inches in width. It is in good vintage condition and would be great in a colorful mid century modern decor. Be sure to visit my store to see other interesting items and African Art.
