This is an antique cover or lid from a Chinese baluster jar. It is called General's Hat due to the shape and detail of the lid. It is hand carved Zitian wood with peony scroll motif. This lid is from the Qing Dynasty. This lid is very lovely and would be asset to anyone with a very fine and large jar. There is a very nice dark patina. It is heavy and the scroll and peony motif is very nicely rendered. There is an old chip on the inside of the outer rim that may have been repaired. There are also several smaller fresh chips to inner lip of rim. These imperfections are captured in the photo images. The measurements are as follows: 5.75 inches to top of finial and 9 inches in diameter to top of finial. This lid would fit a jar with an opening of 7.75 inches. The top of the lid differs slightly in width ( 7.5 to 7.75 inches). Please email with questions.
