This Beautiful Panel is a Wonderful Example of Islamic Textile Art And Decoration. The Basic Materials Used Are Velvet, Silk And Gold Thread. The Decorative Motif is That of a Mosque Which Has Been Created in a Gold Metal Thread Applique Design on a Burgundy Velvet Ground. It is Possible That This Image is a Representation of The "Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul Turkey. At The Lower Vertical Border There Appears to be a Line of Calligraphic Arabic Script. Each of The Four Sides is Embellished With a Ropework Twist Border in Metal Thread Which is on It's Own Visually Intriguing. The Reverse of The Panel is Lined in Olive Green Silk. The Overall Condition of This Panel is Stable. There Are Signs of Extreme Wear to The Velvet Ground But no Holes. The Silk Lining Has a Stain And is Splitting in Areas ( see images) The Actual Image and The Ropework Border Which Really Are What Makes This Panel Special Are Very Stable With No Disturbing Condition Problems. A Brass Rail Has Been Used to Hang The Panel Which Will be Included in This Sale.
The Panel Measures: 58 cm wide x 55 cm high.
I Would Date This Panel to Circa 1880
