This open salt is shaped like an old woman in a comical position. Her bottom hangs over a chamber pot as she smiles and squats to eject some feces. In front of the woman sits another pot divided in two. Whimsical in design, it brings out the rustic peasant atmosphere of the French countryside. The folk style can be seen in the unrefined shape, painting, and floral motif. Blues, whites, reds, and yellows – the standard colors for French faience – are once more put to good use. The piece was made by Desvres. During the 19th century, the Fourmaintraux dynasty made Desvres the most important earthenware centre in northern France. It continues to be known as one of the premier French faience pottery makers.
