This floral frog is shaped like a pig. The holes in its back are meant for holding flowers. Whimsical in design, it brings out the rustic peasant atmosphere of the French countryside. The pig smiles innocently, not knowing that he will soon be dinner. His long snout and ears are particularly endearing. The folk style can be seen in the unrefined shape, painting, and floral motif. Blues, whites, reds, and yellows – the standard colors for French faience – are once more put to good use. The piece was made by Desvres. During the 19th century, the Fourmaintraux dynasty made Desvres the most important earthenware centre in northern France. It continues to be known as one of the premier French faience pottery makers.
