This intriguing ceramic mug breathes mystery and magic. Titled the Pitcher of King Gradlon (Pichet du roi gradlon), the handsome piece is an ode to King Gradlon, a semi-mythic king from the 5th C. who is a hallmark of Breton legend. The blues and greens mix on the side of the drinking ware in flower, knot, and diamond shapes. The handle continues this French faience motif, with the added bonus of its being shaped into the form of a serpent. The adder latches itself onto the cup, showing that only the strong and daring may drink from this pitcher. The mug certainly is fit for a king. It is from Quimper and the artist who signed it is Quillivic. This is a must have piece for any snake lover or any collector of Quimper.
