The central image is of William Shakespeare, the renowned English playwright, with his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon in the foreground. Characters from Shakespeare’s plays surround the edge of the plate on a greyish-black background. Shylock, Rosalind, Touchstone, King Lear, Othello, Portia, Macbeth, Katharine, Malvolio, Henry V, Richard III, and Falstaff all make an appearance. The title of the plate is "Shakespeare" with the subtitle, "Sweet Swan of Avon: 1564-1616." On the back of the plate, the classic Royal Doulton symbol, complete with lion, can be seen. Also on the back is the set number: D5910C. There were several versions of this plate produced. This version dates to c. 1939. Shakespeare’s portrait plate would make a great addition to any Royal Doulton collection or serve as a great gift for any Shakespeare aficionado.
