This 20th Century decorative box is a fine example of Russian folk art. Made of paper mache, the boxes are coated with lacquer, before being hand painted. This particular box is on a black background. The scene depicts two women spinning some time of fabric. They sit on a bench opposite each other with similar hair color, facial features, and dresses. This gives the scene a sense of symmetry. Perhaps they are sisters. One faces slightly toward the viewer, while the other is giving a side profile. Both are intent on their work, as their overseer sits in between the two women, making sure the job is finished properly. She is blonde, with a yellow dress, with red accents. This unites her to the sisters while also keeping her distinct. In the lower left hand corner, a signature in Russian can be seen. The inside of the box is a plain red, which matches the clothing of the two spinners. An excellent folk art piece.
