This particular set is Mary Gregory glass, with its decorated white enamel on a solid cranberry pink colored glass background. Both carafe and tumbler contain the same image. This double image matches the tumbler’s double function. A little girl stands in the field, holding out her hand for a bird to land and perch. This is a classic Mary Gregory theme. The little winged creature extends its feathers as it gracefully descends to the child’s arm. Trees and hills can be seen in the distance. When the tumbler is put on top of the decanter, a beautiful symmetry of images is seen. This ingenious set is based off of the carafes and tumblers that were originally used by French inns for guests. These carafes, filled with red wine, would be placed on the bed stand. The tumbler would act as a lid to protect the contents of the carafe from dusts and insects. It would also serve as a cup. Such sets eventually evolved and became used for drinking water in the middle of the night. This gorgeous pair would make a marvelous addition to any night stand or collection.
