This box, as the mark in the lower right of the central overlay shows, was crafted by the House of Leitao & Irmao of Lisbon, Portugal. They have been the Jewelers to the Portuguese Crown since 1887 and have one of the oldest hallmarks still in use. A piece of art from this maker sold at Christie's several years ago for $10,000 (US). This 20th C. piece is exquisite. The top of the box is overlaid with sterling. This consists of a lovely floral border and a central motif, which depicts the letters GA at the center and is crowned by a luxurious sea shell. The patterns are truly remarkable. The rest of the piece is simply wooden, with sharp edges and lines. This simplicity mixed with the sterling strikes the right balance. Inside the box are two compartments. There is a lock, but sadly, the key is no longer with its mate.
