This delightful set of bookends hails from the Asser & Sherwin shop, founded by two cousins of those names. It was located at 80 & 81 Strand, London - 69 Oxford Street, London from 1860-1882. This company is known for its antique boxes as well as its antique games. Such wood working fits well with this piece. The bookends are made of wood with hinges and sliding compartments (perhaps it was designed for travel?). In one of the compartments, one can see the company's information. The ends themselves depict ornate crosses in brass. This eclectic piece would make a fine addition to any library or study.
