This handsome carved statue dates to the 20th Century and comes from China. It depicts a majestic Chinese imperial guardian lion, often known in the West as a "Foo Dog". Guardian lions were originally called Shi and were first used for an aristocratic aesthetic. They were also believed to provide mythic protection. This particular piece is in a stunning blue with orange elements mixed in. The curled, scale-like hair complements a ferocious grin and larger than life eyes. The lion stands as a sentinel, ready to pounce on any intruder. The base has a triangular pattern and is a swirl of grey, green, and white hues. Such a magnificent foo dog would make a stunning addition to any home or collection.
