This is a beautiful piece of ceramic artwork produced by the De Morgan brand in the 1880's. One can see that it comes from De Morgan's "Merton Abbey period" (1882 - 1888), as shown by the faint, impressed mark on the back of the tile. This piece is from a style known as "Lustre Ware," meaning that it is glazed by means of applying a metallic deposit to its already-glazed surface, in order to produce a glossy effect like no other. Examples of this style of Lustre Ware have been found dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Egypt and Assyria. Truly a beautiful and uncommon collector's piece. This item is in impeccable condition and is sold as is.
