This set of two porcelain dishes dates to c. 1880 and comes from the Bodley family, which made pottery at their Burslem pottery in the 19th century. It depicts golden swallows flying with heads pointing toward the ground past some bamboo shoots. The shading on the bamboo, like the entire swallows, is gold leaf. The plant and the birds sit on a pale blue background, with the only other colors being the yellow of the bamboo stalk and the green of the bamboo leaves. The plate is surrounded on its border by a thin line of gold. A gorgeous set for a collector of 19th century English china.
