Vintage Yemenite Yemen Labbeh Tuyur (Bird Necklace) & Earrings

This exquisite set is called the Labbeh Tuyur or Bird Necklace made possibly by the famous Jewish silversmith Yihḥyeh al-Abyadh or by one of his sons, especially Meysha al-Abyadh, but also by other silversmiths. The labbeh tuyūr necklace differs significantly from other types of Yemeni necklaces, in structure, motifs, and technique. From ethnographic interviews it appears that this type of necklace was originally made for the ladies of the imam's family, and later on was also worn by other Muslim women of means. Because of its motifs, however, it was considered inappropriate for Jewish women to wear it.

There is an example in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem that is very similar to this set. The work is extremely fine and delicate. Notice the moon and stars and the six sided stars in the neck piece going up to the clasp. There are touches of gold coloring which lead me to believe this piece was guilt washed at one time or perhaps only in certain locations. No hallmarks of any kind that I could find. Condition appears to be good with no missing parts or issues. Has not been tested for silver content, but appears to be a high grade.

This set belonged to my Great Grandmother and may have been a treasure she brought back from when she and my Great Grandfather spent some time living in Russia in the 1920's.

The length of the necklace is 19" with a 5" center drop. Weight is 69 grams. The screwback earrings have a 1 1/2" drop and weigh 5.1 grams.

Yemenite jewelry, known for its beauty and delicate filigree, is probably the most popularized of Yemenite art forms. In Yemen, jewelry was one of the luxuries enjoyed by women, for whom possession of a few pieces was important in that it served as a status symbol. However, the wedding costume and its jewelry was not owned by each bride, but belonged to a wealthy member of the community who rented the ceremonial outfit repeatedly.
