For sale here is a BIG pair of vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling silver and brass Mexican modernist Horse design screwback earrings designed by Estela Popowski (1931-2008, USA) in Taxco. Great design in mixed metals in a large format that will make a statement when worn! Popowski was a jewish emigre from Poland who fled from the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba with her parents and siblings in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of different Mexican silversmiths. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. Earrings measure 1-1/4" by 3/4" and the pair weigh 10.2 grams total. Marked at backs as shown, "Popowski Sterling", Eagle 23, and additional marks. Excellent vintage condition with fine light wear and some tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
